Med Center Health clears up monkeypox concerns

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-With one probable case of monkeypox in Warren County, and cases rising rapidly around the United States, Med Center Health is clearing up some concerns about the disease.

With school right around the counter, Infectious Disease Physician Dr. Lusby says she’s not worried about transmission in schools and kids at this point.  She says that they’re seeing the virus primarily in men ages 20 to 50.

Dr. Lusby also said there is a lot of stigma behind monkeypox and some people might not be seeing help because of that. This can lead to cases that go undiagnosed, resulting in a sharp increase of transmission and cases.

States like New York and California are seeing the most cases, but people should still take precautions to stay healthy.

“I do want people to be on alert about it and be aware of it. I don’t want them to the point where they’re totally freaking out but I want people to understand that it’s out there and can be contractible and it is something that’s going around,” said Dr. Lusby.

The Jynneos vaccine is available for people who have been in contact with someone who has monkeypox. It is recommended to be administered within four days of contact.
