May is National Foster Care Month
Bowling Green, Ky.- National Foster Care month is celebrated during the month of May. It’s a time to acknowledge and celebrate the many foster families across the nation.
More than 400,000 children are currently in foster care in the United States, more than 10,000 of them live right here in Kentucky.
For those 10,000 youth in need of home and family, foster parents play a crucial role.
Finding foster parents for those youth continues to be an issue, with many people believing that they don’t qualify or have what it takes.
“The goal is just making sure that the kids are in a safe space, whether their goal is to return to parents or maybe their goal is adoption. It could just be that these kids are needing a new permanent home. Or maybe they’re going to return to a family member at some point, but really providing them with the services that they need to help them transition,” said Andrea Denise Holden, therapeutic foster care case manager.
To become a foster parent, you must be 21 or older, be financially stable and attend foster parent training.
