May is Mental Health Awareness Month

BOWLING  GREEN, Ky. – May is Mental Health Awareness Month. While it may be a mostly invisible problem, the number of those suffering from a mental illness may surprise you.

Lifeskills’ Melanie Watts says one in five, or 66 million people suffer from some type of mental illness. She also says the reasons for developing mental illness can range from genetics to the environment or even stress.

According to Dr. John Sively, a social worker at Lifeskills, even with more awareness, the shroud of stigma still exists.

With more avenues for treatment, including telemedicine, people  have a better chance than ever to lose the weight of mental  illness.
