Massive propane fire destroys Florida homes
(WFLA) Fire crews monitored hot spots burning into the night after a Florida propane storage facility went up in flames Monday afternoon.
Investigators don’t know what sparked the fire at the Kosan Crisplant facility south of Sebring.
Highlands County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor said a man was inside the warehouse when the fire broke out. He suffered second and third degree burns and was flown to Tampa General Hospital.
The fire sparked countless subsequent explosions as propane cylinder tanks caught fire, blowing hundreds of feet up into the air like popcorn kernels. The warehouse is destroyed.
Bashoor explained the fire quickly spread, burning down ten trailers at a mobile home park and threatening an animal hospital. It then carried farther to the west for nearly a quarter mile, crossing over US 27 and sparking brush fires which closed a portion of the highway for several hours.
Fire crews could not put water on the fire and were forced to let the propane burn out.
