SMITHS GROVE, Ky. – One man has won a distillery tour and cash prize package from the Kentucky Lottery after making a stop in Smiths Grove.

Lottery officials say Darryl Board of Mobile, Alabama received the call sharing he is a grand prize winner of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Second-Chance retailer promotion.

Board was traveling to Kentucky from Alabama to care for his ailing sister, according to the Kentucky Lottery. After her death, officials say Board returned to Smiths Grove, where his sister lived, to handle funeral arrangements.

Board stopped at a local Marathon station to buy the $5 Kentucky Bourbon Trail Scratch-off tickets.

Board said he likely bought six or seven tickets and won on a couple but entered the rest, officials say.

Lottery officials say Board said he was having lunch with his daughter when he got the call telling him he had won.

“She started laughing and asked me, ‘Why are you crying?’ I never expected to hit that day. I was blown away.”

“I said, ‘Oh lord!’ It was a complete surprise and brought something good to my life,” he said. “I thought, ‘okay, she (sister) must be looking down on me.”

Board said he looks forward to coming back to Kentucky for something fun and experience the bourbon distillery tours.
