Man returned to Logan County from Vietnam to face rape charges involving child

LOGAN COUNTY, Ky. – One man indicted on charges related to alleged sexual contact with a child has been delivered to Logan County from Vietnam.

According to a release by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, in December 2019, the agency opened an investigation following a report of alleged sexual conduct between an adult man and a child.

Detective Laura Casey conducted several interviews, executed multiple search warrants and made extensive efforts to find Daniel T. Deweese, authorities say.

The case was later presented before the Logan County Grand Jury.

Authorities say on June 9, 2020, the Logan Circuit Court issued an indictment warrant charging Deweese with second-degree rape without force and second-degree sodomy.

While searching for Deweese, the release says Casey learned Deweese may have left the country. She confirmed he departed the United States on January 28, 2020 on a flight to Hong Kong with no return flight booked, authorities say.

Deweese was later entered into the National Crime Information Center as a wanted person.

Although he was believed to be outside of the country, authorities say the case was not closed or forgotten. The warrant remained active, and Casey remained committed to locating him and bringing him back to Logan County to face charges, the release says.

In May 2026, authorities say the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Marshals Service notified Casey that Deweese had been found in Vietnam. Through coordinated efforts with Casey, the Logan County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Marshals Service, Deweese was returned from Vietnam to San Francisco, California.

Sheriff Stephen Stratton then authorized Logan County Sheriff’s Office deputies to transport Deweese from San Francisco to Logan County, the release states.

“Detective Casey remained committed to this case for more than six years and never allowed it to be forgotten,” Stratton said. “Locating someone outside the United States requires patience, persistence, and strong partnerships. Her determination, along with assistance from our local and federal partners, made it possible to bring Deweese back to Logan County to face these charges.”

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office states it appreciates the assistance from the Logan County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
