Man barricades himself inside a convenience market stockroom
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A Bee Spring man is accused of escaping police custody, locking himself and a cashier in a convenience store and barricading himself in a stockroom before Kentucky State Police caught him Monday morning.
Cory Burns, 32, was in state police custody at LifeSkills on Woodway Street with his hands cuffed in front of his body when police said he took off, according to Burns’ arrest citation.
“They ended up signing him over to go to Western State for a mental inquest hold,” said Trooper Joshua Cummings of Kentucky State Police Post 3. “Prior to a deputy to come and pick him up, he actually fled from there.”
When police arrived at the United Gas and Food Store on Morgantown Road, the cashier unlocked the door and let them in. Burns refused to come out of the stock room, according to the citation. Police made entry into the stockroom and took Burns into custody as he kicked and resisted arrest, according to his citation.
“When we were able to push the door open he was just laying on the floor,” Cummings said. “It didnt’ appear that there was a lock on the door or that he was trying to barricade it other than just pure, physical will.”
A trooper used his Taser on Burns outside to get Burns into the police cruiser.
“It was a handful just to get him into the back of a cruiser,” Cummings added. “Unfortunately in situations like that we really try not to try and do too much harm to a person that’s in that state of mind. We want to try and prevent injuries to ourselves and to the general public.”
Burns then attempted to kick a window out of the police cruiser, according to the citation. Police opened the cruiser back door to try to talk to Burns and he rolled himself out onto the ground.
He was face forward, held onto the back tire, kicked and police Tased him again, according to the citation.
“On a person that is suffering from the condition he is, we’re trying to limit ourselves and what we do in way of harming him and harming ourselves,” Cummings added.
Burns screamed “Satan worshippers” at police.
He was placed back into the cruiser and taken to The Medical Center to have the Taser probes removed before being lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail.
“Any time we have a Taser deployment we really like to get them checked out,” said Cummings.
He is charged with third-degree escape, resisting arrest, second-degree fleeing or evading police on foot, second-degree disorderly conduct and two counts of third-degree assault of a police officer.
