Man arrested after sheriff’s patrol vehicle shot in Taylor County

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – One man is facing multiple charges after troopers say a sheriff’s patrol vehicle was shot on scene in Campbellsville.

On Dec. 14, the Kentucky State Police says it received a request for investigative assistance from the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office.

Troopers and detectives arrived on scene at a residence on Pops Road in Taylor County.

Authorities say they learned through a preliminary investigation that sheriff Dickie Benningfield responded to a report of gunfire near the residence.

Upon arrival, troopers say Benningfield was standing next to his patrol vehicle and speaking with an individual that had reported gunfire. The Kentucky State Police stated Benningfield heard several shots come from a nearby residence and saw several rounds had hit his patrol vehicle.

Authorities say the sheriff and deputies then went to the residence where the gunshots came from and located Cody Laytart, 31, of Campbellsville.

Laytart was arrested and transported to the Taylor County Detention Center.

He is charged with attempted murder of a first responder (peace officer), third-degree assault (police officer), second-degree terroristic threatening, second-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest, alcohol intoxication in a public place and violation of conditions of release.

The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
