Mammoth Cave National Park Heritage Trail to close for project completion

MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. – A popular Mammoth Cave National Park trail will close for project completion.

Mammoth Cave National Park says the Heritage Trail, Old Guides Trail, and visitor center pedestrian bridge will close for nine months on Monday, January 6.

The park says the closure will allow the Heritage Trail Rehabilitation Project to be completed. The project is expected to improve visuals and visitor experiences and provide wheelchair accessibility.

The current trail comprises a series of raised, wooden boardwalks and pathways. The park says these sections are impacted by rain and freezing conditions. Frequent maintenance is performed for safety purposes.

A hardened cement surface will replace the wooden boardwalks and allow for the removal of wooden structures that block visuals.

The park says the area behind the main hotel will be redesigned and a small amphitheater will be installed.

Visitor services at the Lodge at Mammoth Cave will remain operational.

The project is expected to be completed in September 2025.
