Mammoth Cave National Park celebrates completion of cave trail rehabilitation project

MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. – A part of the cave trails at Mammoth Cave National Park is now safer for future generations.
On Thursday, park officials and invited guests celebrated the completion of a trail rehabilitation project.
The project, spanning about one mile of cave trail, aimed to improve safety, the tour experience and protection of natural and cultural resources. Officials say construction crews replaced the concrete walkway and extended the viewpoint further over the lake.
In total, the project took around 1.5 million pounds of materials, officials say.
Funding was provided through the Great American Outdoors Act.
Additional improvements include the overlook of Crystal Lake and new benches at Fairy Ceiling.
Public cave tours through the Domes and Dripstones tour route will resume in early October.
