DOJ investigates race-based harassment at Madison County School District

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – A school district in Kentucky will be making changes to stop racial harassment in schools. This comes after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.

In October 2021, the Justice Department opened an investigation into the Madison County District under Title IX.

The department says they uncovered numerous incidents of race-based harassment. This includes incidents where black and multi-racial students were called racial slurs and more.

On Monday, the DOJ announced a settlement agreement with the school district.

The agreement requires the district to take several steps, such as hiring three employees to process complaints, updating racial harassment policies, and training staff to identify and respond to complaints of racial harassment.

One family targeted by this harassment shared how they feel about the situation.
