Logan County man who threatened judge, prosecutor, receives sentence

FRANKFORT, Ky. – A Logan County man who threatened a prosecutor and a judge has been sentenced.

According to the office of Attorney General Russell Coleman, Melvin Haley, 44, pleaded guilty to two counts of Retaliating Against Participant in Legal Process (Class D Felony) in Logan County Circuit Court. The action was taken by the Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Unit.

Haley made threats against the Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney while being prosecuted for criminal domestic violence in a case against him. Haley also threatened the circuit court judge.

The Office of the Attorney General says Haley was convicted of strangulation, second degree, in the criminal domestic violence case. He was sentenced to three years.

Haley was sentenced to an additional year as a result of the plea. He must remain 500 feet away from the Logan County Courthouse, unless he is required to be there. Haley is also barred from contacting the prosecutor or the judge.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.

Assistant Attorney General Richie Kemp prosecuted the case on behalf of the Commonwealth.
