Local Superintendents push for more funding ahead of legislative session

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Wednesday morning, school superintendents in the the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative held a virtual press conference to lay out some of their legislative and advocacy priorities.

Superintendents from schools across the region were in attendance and are asking lawmakers to increase school funding.

Warren County Public Schools Superintendent, Rob Clayton, stated that public school funding from the state must be adequate and equitable if they are to succeed, especially during the global pandemic.

“We ask the general assembly to provide more

flexibility to local school boards and their ability to implement or raise taxes to support students,” Clayton said. “Bottom line, Kentucky needs to make a stronger investment in its public schools”.

Gary Fields, the Superintendent for Bowling Green Independent Schools said that although the budget is a top priority, they also have several other issues they want to address as well, such as, professional educator recruitment, retention and development.

“Kentucky’s educational policy must ensure that we can  attract and retain the best and brightest teachers, administrators and staff to serve our children in our schools,” Fields stated in the meeting.

The General Assembly is set to start its regular session on January 5th, 2021
