Local store prepares for Derby
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The first Saturday in May is right around the corner. One local boutique is helping those gear up for all things Derby.
Prim & Brim is one of Bowling Green’s staple shops, and the company has helped several people get ready for the big day.
Owner, Kathleen Overton, says it’s “all about the hats.” The trends of this year is “leaning more towards fascinators.” Overton recommends “a classic Derby hat,” especially for first-time Derby goers. Prim & Brim is working with local artist and Western Kentucky University student, Emma Cox, to customize several Derby hats and purses. Overton says this adds a “unique” touch to an outfit. The boutique partners with other local businesses, like Kenzie Parker, to “help match with perfect accessories.”
Overton says the men normally go with a bow tie, but they can also go with a regular tie. She says adding a “fun theme” to an outfit is a must. Prim & Brim offers a “great selection” of men’s hats and “93 different styles” of men’s socks. For a less formal look, Overton recommends wearing a “nice jacket with a pocket square.” She says these pieces give a creative feel and “pop of color.”
Decorating your home is a Derby tradition. Overton says “it starts when you walk in the front door” with a bright, festive welcome sign to “get the spirits started.” Prim & Brims offers disposable place mats, table runners, and a “wide variety” of napkins.
Whether you are going to the Derby or a watch party, it’s custom to “bring the host a gift” to “thank them for their generosity.” Overton says there is “something for everyone.” Four legged friends “still need to be styled.” Prim & Brim offers pet leashes and collars to ensure your furry bestie is looking fashion-forward. A go-to gift is a tea towel. Overton says there are a plethora to chose from at Prim & Brim — “cute and funny.”
Prim & Brim’s pop-up store will be open until May 2nd. You can watch the Kentucky Derby 2025 on WNKY NBC 40.
