Local Schools talk about NTI Days

SOUTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY – Many schools in the region have been closed because of the recent winter weather this week. But that doesn’t mean that students have had three days off.

Students have been taking part in online learning or what the schools in the area refer to as non-traditional instruction days.

In rural Metcalfe County, Josh Hurt and Metcalfe County School System say that they are trying to make the best of it.

“I’ve heard positive things from our building principals. And so I think our teachers are working hard and our students are working hard and making the best of a tough situation. Obviously, we’d much rather have the doors open to be in-person, but hopefully we are doing a good job of keeping the learning going and our kids are making the best of what what has been given to us,” Hurt said.

For others such as Amanda Abell, Superintendent of Caverna Independent Schools in Barren County it came down to a decision on how they would go about doing their learning. Though the district like Barren County School System is a one-to-one Chromebook per student district, they opted for a more traditional method of learning.

“We did decide not to send those home and to prepare packets ahead of time that were sent home in an entire folder with each student. And we did that just because we tend to lose a lot of devices when we send them home. And also some of our families live in areas that have spotty Wi-Fi or they may not have access to Wi-Fi. So we just wanted all students to be on the same plane,” Abell said.

It seems to be working and Heather Gardner, the Communications Director of Barren County Schools summed up almost all of what the other two school officials said.

“NTI works well, but for a limited period of time. So, you know, our goal as a district is not to do more than three inches days back to back at possible. The benefit of it is, you know, the learning continues. There’s not this huge gap. You know, if you’re going to be out for a week of school and you still have that connection to the content,” Gardner said.

Many schools in the area have canceled classes on Friday, Jan. 18 because of expected inclement winter weather some will do another NTI day, but Josh Hurt in Metcalfe County, sang a song about snow days to break the news that his county, will have a good old fashion snow day.
