Local man develops new website for sharing high school sports information
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Have you ever been away from home and curious how your school is playing during the Frdiay night lights? What about attending a local sporting event and wondering what’s the score for your crosstown rival?
One Bowling Green man has crafted up a solution, building a new sports information website that’s gaining traction from many across the Bluegrass.
“I honestly thought, ‘Okay, I’ll play with this for a week. I’m a tinkerer. I’ll just set it off to the side. I’ll never touch it again.’ That was my initial thought, and as soon as it took off, I knew at that point, there’s no turning back now.”
Meet Matt Stearsman, originally from Hopkins County but now in Warren County where, in addition to running his own business, he has recently developed kyhssports.com, a place for Kentucky high school sports fans to find scores, stats, standings and more.
Stearsman grew up playing sports and has an extensive history coaching men’s and women’s college basketball in a variety of places.
Coding and computer work, however, are not necessarily his forte.
That’s where Claude AI comes into the mix, allowing Stearsman to build the user-friendly interface through a process of trial and error.
“ I don’t have any coding experience, but I have that vision of this is what I want it to look like, so if I can get that down to Claude, ‘Hey, this is what I want,’ Claude is fantastic at doing it,” Stearsman said.
The idea started as a way to stay up to date with scores for high school football games on Fridays featuring a unique live scoring function, something the state hasn’t seen to this degree.
“Kind of the first thing for me was, okay, how can I get these scores live for fans? Because even if they’re at a game, they’re reading halftime scores off, but they’re getting those from other radio people or somebody’s texting,” Stearsman said.
In the early stages, there were fixes to be made, but the website in its brief existence has evolved to serve as a reliable source of information for a large portion of Kentucky sports followers, all in just a few clicks.
Using that same mindset, Stearsman is hoping to grow the website into a place for not just football, but all sports, and doing so by taking things one day at a time.
“That’s the ultimate goal here is if we can get every stat, every roster to where these kids get the recognition they deserve and the coaches get the recognition they deserve. That’s, at the end of the day, what it’s all about,” Stearsman said. “This state takes so much pride in their high school sports. I’ve lived all over, and the way these people get behind their high school sports is totally different. There’s such a pride from these small towns and small communities, and that’s who I’m trying to serve.”
