Local landlords react to eviction relief fund announcement

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Some reassurance is coming to renters during the pandemic.

Governor Andy Beshear announced on Monday that he is creating an eviction relief fund, designed to help both renters and landlords.

The fund will reimburse eligible landlords for missed rent payments during the pandemic. The goal is to hopefully keep more people in their homes without several months of rent payments owed.

Cave Mill Apartments property manager Trinity Estes is happy the governor is creating the fund and one word specifically comes to her mind.

“Relief. It makes me feel good knowing that I do not have to apply late payments and things of that nature to people that are already obviously struggling,” said Estes.

But on the other hand, Sky Property Management partner Michael Vitale says people should be careful.

“I would like to see some qualifications involved where relief is granted to people who have been able to verify their need for assistance. I believe some tenants might take advantage of the situation,” said Vitale.

Ultimately, if a renter is having trouble making payments, communication is key.

“I would advise all tenants that are having trouble at this time to contact their landlords or property managers. Most will attempt to help, most will want to help. But the worst that can be done is if you go silent and don’t communicate with people,” said Vitale.

The fund will draw on $15 million sent to Kentucky in federal coronavirus relief assistance.
