Local housing staff learn how to avoid unintentional discrimination

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green Apartment Association hosted a fair housing presentation for local housing staff.

The purpose was to educate them on the Fair Housing Act and how to avoid discrimination when leasing to residents.

Shayla Lynch, the Assistant Director of the Lexington Fair Housing Council, led the free presentation.

Local housing staff and landlords learned how to avoid unintentional discrimination when leasing to their residents.

They also received guidance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on the proper use of criminal records and how to provide reasonable accommodation regarding disabled residents.

Lynch assists victims of housing discrimination, analyzes Fair Housing related issues, and initiates complaints with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development or litigation when appropriate.

The Fair Housing Act protects potential tenants from not receiving housing based on their race, religion, national origin, familial status, disability or gender.

Another free fair housing course will take place tomorrow in Owensboro.
