Local hemp farmer demystifies hemp growth challenges
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Hemp is often mistaken for marijuana.
While marijuana comes from a hemp plant, the two are not the same, which is why local pharmacist Laura Spencer addressed the differences when speaking to the Bowling Green Rotary Club on Wednesday.
During their weekly meeting, Spencer presented on “Demystifying the Complexities of Growing Hemp,” something she’s actually become quite familiar with after starting her own hemp farm with her two sons, Ben and Jon.
Spencer explained to Rotary members everything that goes into starting, owning and operating a hemp farm, which, by the way, is a laundry list of items that must be kept up to code for it to be legal.
The hemp industry has grown dramatically over the past several years, especially with the increase in CBD products on the market, and Spencer expects that pattern to continue in the future.
“Even if CBD kind of calms down, the hemp fiber and seeds are gonna take off at an astronomical rate,” Spencer said.
She advised anyone interested in starting their own hemp farm to conduct thorough research before getting fully involved in the growing business.
