Local health experts stress importance of staying safe during Fourth of July

BOWLING GREEN, KY – The Fourth of July marks the 249th anniversary of the United States’ independence. While many will celebrate with fireworks throughout the night, it’s also important to remember that safety should always come first.

“I think protective clothing, protective gloves, eyewear would be a must,” said Thomas Cunningham, Adult Emergency Medicine Physician for Norton Healthcare.

In 2024, there were 11 fireworks-related deaths, and over 14,000 injuries across the U.S. – a 52 percent increase from the year before.

While the adults love to sett of fireworks, kids enjoy watching just as much. However, they are also at risk. In 2024, children accounted for nearly 4,000 fireworks-related injuries.

Dr. Brit Anderson, Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician for Norton Healthcare, emphasized parents should be cautious, whether they are bringing their kids to a show, or lighting fireworks themselves.

“Maybe you’re going to go to professional fireworks instead and enjoy them,” Anderson said. “Maybe you’re going to get your kids glow sticks and flashlights and let them run around with those. And that way you don’t have to worry so much about the heat from a different type of firework or sparkler.”

Although Warren County reported zero fireworks-related injuries in 2024, Anderson said if an accident does happen, knowing what to do before going to the hospital can make a big difference.

“The caveat would be anytime you feel like your life or limb is at jeopardy, I would immediately call 911 or the E.R.,” Cunningham said. “Now, I would say simple minor burns, things that are just mild redness, mild pain. That’s something that could be either treated at home or at the immediate care center.”

So if there are plans to watch the fireworks at the Barren River Lake, after a Hot Rods game, or in the backyard – stay alert and stay safe.
