Local college lets students experience intoxication simulation

BOWLING GREEN Ky.- At Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College, students and faculty learned how intoxication can affect one’s vision.

It was done through the drunk goggles’ alcohol education program. With the goggles, students tried to perform activities like walking in a straight line, completing mazes, and catching a ball.

“It really distorts your vision and makes everything look a lot different. We were tossing a ball between each other and I couldn’t catch it. When walking the line, I kept stumbling. It was fun but educational for me,” said student ambassador Lorena Griffith.

It’s one thing to hear of the effects, but another to live them out in a safe environment.

“I think it’s great that there’s education on campus where students can learn, get information, and make good choices from there,” Griffith said.

This program was a collaboration between student life and engagement and campus security. The National Guard also lent the goggles for the activities, each representing a different intensity of intoxication.

“We’re an educational institution so I like having the opportunity to provide such types of activities for our students. Knowing that we have organizations like the national guard who have these resources to get out not just to our community, I’m thankful for,” said student life and engagement director David Travis.

The overall goal is to ensure that students learn just how much alcohol overconsumption can affect daily tasks.

“Alcohol, even though it’s a legal substance and can be enjoyed responsibly, that’s exactly how it should be done,” Travis said.
