Local college holds 5th annual African-American Read In
BOWLING GREEN Ky.-SouthCentral Kentucky Community and Technical College celebrated Black History Month with an annual read in event.
The 5th annual African-American Read In took place at the college, where students and staff were given the chance to select poetry or literature written by African American authors. They then read it to the audience.
Every year, attendees are encouraged to think of various reflection questions, including how the poems impact their lives, or what pieces of literature drew them in the most.
Sophomore Betina Asukulu attended for the first time Tuesday. She said the event really hits home.
“It’s very important because I’m from Africa and we didn’t really have a lot of this. I can see how important it is to my people here,” Asukulu said.
The National African American read-in was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month.
