Local businesses offer meals for children in need amid SNAP uncertainty

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Two locally-operated businesses are among the many organizations stepping up to help keep food on community tables.
Right now, Kentucky families are still working out what this month’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits will look like for their household as the government shutdown continues. For this reason, some members of the community may be facing concerns of food insecurity.
Chicken Salad Chick shared the following post to social media, confirming it is offering free meals to children in need from Nov. 1 through Nov. 16:
“Please note, this is not a political stance. We are locally owned and operated and just want to support our community the best way we know how. At Chicken Salad Chick, our mission is to spread joy, enrich lives and serve others — and right now, that means taking care of our community in a small but meaningful way. To help support families impacted by the pause in SNAP benefits, kids can eat free from Nov. 1–16. No questions asked — just good food, good company, and a little extra kindness. Bring the family in, share a meal together, and let us take care of the little ones. Valid for dine-in only. Child must be present to redeem free meal. Together, let’s keep spreading joy — one scoop at a time.”
The Bowling Green location says this offer for children is valid at Chicken Salad Chick Bowling Green, Owensboro and Evansville locations.
In addition, Boca Tacos and Tequila shared that it is also offering free meals for children in need, with no purchase necessary, while supplies last.
The restaurant stated, “Boca Tacos is committed to expanding our community support to families in need, with a special focus on our children. No child should suffer the consequences of adult decisions. We will be offering complimentary meals to children. Simply visit our restaurant and request a free meal for your child, no purchase necessary, and no questions asked. Our sole expectation in return is that you use these meals if you truly need them, rather than simply seeking free food. If you are capable of obtaining food, we respectfully request that you allow this opportunity to benefit a family in need who is uncertain about their next meal. As a Veteran-owned business, Boca Tacos is committed to contributing to our community during difficult times, although our abilities are limited. Please help us spread the word that this will be available effective immediately while supplies last.”
It is encouraged to call these locations ahead of time to ensure availability of supplies.
In addition, a growing number of local resources and food banks are offering meal resources in the month of November. To learn more, click here.
