Local Bowling Green rally brings crowd of supporters including local police officers

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others at the hands of police brought together many people in Bowling Green to rally against racism.

Over 100 people gathered Wednesday to rally in front of the Warren County Justice Center. Passing cars honked in support.

Derik Overstreet organized the event for equality.

“It’s time. It’s been time for hundreds of years since the country started. Now, I feel like everybody is embracing that. It’s really good to see all the young people out here promoting it and working for it actively,” Overstreet said.

While gathering in the blazing Kentucky sun, attendees from all walks of life attended with their homemade signs.

“I feel like if you have the ability to protest, you should. If you don’t, I feel like you should be donating, or at least listening to people that suffer from these issues,” attendee Annelise Richards said.

“I’m here supporting all my friends who deal with these issues daily. In solidarity, to learn, and support them,” another attendee Katrina Powell added.

The rally turned into a march, taking to the streets and making at stop at the police station where rally attendees chanted for support from the police. Which is exactly what happened as some local police officers including Deputy Chief Mike Delaney joined the march.

As the march continued, Overstreet said the turnout and overwhelming support shows that there is hope for a future where equality exists.

“A bunch of people that look different, different ages and sexes, all out here fighting the good fight. It’s a powerful thing when it’s not one specific group. Everybody looks different, but everybody’s working towards the same thing. It’s a good thing,” Overstreet said.
