Local banjo maker’s workshop destroyed, but his craft lives on

BARREN COUNTY, Ky. – For more than 20 years, Arthur Hatfield has crafted high-quality, affordable banjos that musicians across the state, country and world treasure. But late Friday night, an unfortunate fire destroyed Hatfield’s workshop, the home of his beloved Hatfield Banjos.

The shop, just steps away from Hatfield’s home, has been the cornerstone to his business since the early 2000’s. It was there that Arthur turned his passion and experience in music into a purpose: to create well-crafted and affordable banjos to supplement an overpriced market.

The fire gutted the workshop and destroyed tools, materials and decades of memories.
“I was sitting right in this chair and I looked out the window and I seen kind of a flicker and I saw light outside. So I went to the back door and checked in. The flames were done already, gone way up in the air.” Hatfield said. “It was passed. I didn’t even think about getting anything out.”

Hatfield’s shop didn’t just make banjos. It made memories. It was a place where music began, where passion meets craftsmanship, and where every banjo told a story for customers and friends alike.
“I pick these things up and I just think about it, you know? I think about the jokes and the little funny stories and some of the crazy requests from customers.” Friend and long-time customer David Barnett stated, “I mean, that little shop at the end of Bert Ridge Road, it was just what it was a for banjo nerds. It was just a magical place, all that I can say.”

It was truly a magical place. While the workshop may be destroyed, Hatfield will continue making his iconic Hatfield Banjos, all with steady hands and an unshaken spirit — all with the help of the community.

“I’ve had many offers from people to replace the tools I lost. If I took all the tools that I’ve had offered to me, I would probably fill that barn (out there).” Hatfield spoke on the support from the community.

Arthur Hatfield’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of our community. His journey proves that even in the face of loss, a passion for one’s craft—and the music it inspires—can endure all.
