Local animal shelters experiencing mass intakes
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Animal shelters across our area are currently seeing large amounts of intakes recently, leading to a Code Red at the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society.
Shelter staff tell us due to the recent storms we’ve seen, they’ve had to keep their dogs inside, which leads to overcrowding in their kennels.
This overcrowding can unfortunately lead to tough decisions having to be made, which is why they are doing $25 adoptions this weekend, as well as $25 spay & neuter fees as well.
Staff stress the importance of dropping by and taking home a new friend.
“Unfortunately, when our kennels are so full, we have to make very, very tough decisions. So when we say that you are taking out an animal to save another animal’s life and give it space in a kennel that is no exaggeration. You are literally saving a life not only for that animal that you’re taking home, but for that next animal that’s walking through the door,” Katlyn Hare, an adoption counselor with the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society says.
When we spoke to the Simpson County Animal Shelter on Thursday, director Ruth Garriott told us she’s seen a similar issue at their shelter.
Hare added even if you can adopt, simply dropping by and taking pictures of the animals or spreading the word is just as helpful.
