Local animal rescue will celebrate one year Saturday

RUSSELLVILLE, KY – A Logan County animal rescue is celebrating a major milestone this weekend, marking one year of lifesaving work, and hoping to inspire more people to get involved.

Southern Paws Animal Rescue, based in Russellville, is celebrating its first anniversary as a registered nonprofit on Saturday. What began as a small cat sanctuary in the home of founder Kali Remington has grown into a full-fledged adoption center in just 12 months.

In that time, the organization has helped more than 100 cats and over 30 dogs find forever homes, with many adoptions in Bowling Green.

The rescue is entirely donation-funded and relies on the support of the community to continue its mission. Its biggest challenge at the moment? Overcrowding. The shelter currently houses more than 40 cats waiting to be adopted.

“We typically take them in, get them vetted when they’re old enough, then spayed or neutered, and adopted into loving homes,” Remington said. “If they’re too young, we place them with foster families to ensure they gain weight and get the care they need.”

To celebrate the milestone, Southern Paws is hosting a First Anniversary Party this Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the shelter. The event will feature bounce houses for kids, massage tables for adults, a bake sale, and of course—adorable kittens available for adoption.
