Living Well: Utilizing Healthy Eating Portions

When it comes to maintaining a healthy weight, how much you eat is just as important as what you eat. But it’s so easy to consume too much.
In today’s Living Well, News 40’s Morgan Hoover gets tips on how to make sure you’re eating the proper food portions every meal.

How much a person should eat varies, based on factors such as a person’s age, current weight and height, metabolism, sex, and how active they are. But a key part of eating healthy is consuming balanced portions.

But, there is a tool to help you get the serving size right at every meal.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta with the Chasing Life Podcast says to simply use your hand to measure. So for protein like chicken or fish, you want to aim for a portion the size of your palm. For carbs like rice or pasta, a clenched fist is gonna be a good measure as a cupped hand equals a half-cup of a serving of food. For vegetables, you’ll want to go for two cupped hands. And for fats like cheese or peanut butter, they should be around the size of your thumb, as that’s about a tablespoon.
