Living Well: One 11-year-old’s recovery after fibula surgery

An 11-year-old girl from New Jersey thought she’d never be able to walk again because of a rare condition.
In today’s Living Well, we see how this girl is now defying the odds, one step at a time.

Her rare condition is called fibular hemimelia. Leila Ricks says one leg was shorter than the other preventing her from walking like other kids. Doctors at the Mount Sinai Hospital were able to save Leila’s leg after multiple surgeries, starting in 2020. Now, Leia is able to play competitive softball with kids her age.
