LifeWorks for Autism introduces new commuter program
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A program on Western Kentucky University’s campus is providing easier access for those who need it.
LifeWorks for Autism helps adults who are autistic transition to independent living.
However, staff realize that not everyone who uses their program needs to utilize the living learning communities or housing they provide.
That’s why they’ve created what’s called the On the Go Transition Academy, which provides the same things that everyone else uses, just on a commuter basis.
Program director Hendrix Brakefield describes how important having these services are for those who live on site and commute.
“We provide a community of peers, which is probably the most important component that exists… and we are dedicated to providing those person centered, individualized supports on a daily basis. Individuals who are out there living in different communities… if you’re an autistic adult and you have a desire to live independently, you maybe would benefit from the supports that we provide here that you’re just not going to find elsewhere,” he says.
Brakefield also adds with this program, the main goal is to serve as many people as possible in the community.
