Lawmaker files proposed legislation prohibiting callers from misrepresenting their numbers on caller ID
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky Majority Whip Rep. Kevin Bratcher, R-Louisville, has pre filed a bill request that if passed, prohibits many of the tactics telephone scammers use to separate unsuspecting Kentucky citizens from their hard-earned money.
In Bill Request 393, Bratcher is asking other Kentucky lawmakers to prohibit telephone solicitations that misrepresent the name or telephone number in caller identifications services and add criminal fines and restitution for violations of the proposed legislation.
If passed, the law would prohibit callers from asking people for money to remove derogatory information from a person’s credit history, asking for money to recover a lost item and other tactics often used by telephone scammers.
The bill request was pre filed Nov. 28. The Kentucky Legislature convenes Jan. 8.
