Last full-size Kmart in mainland US closes doors this weekend
BRIDGEHAMPTON, N.Y. (CNN) – Attention, Kmart shoppers – it’s the end of an era.
The last full-size Kmart in the mainland U.S. will be closing its doors for good on Sunday.
That store is located in Bridgehampton, New York.
Once that closes, all that will be left is a smaller Kmart with limited items in Miami.
There are also a couple stores in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.
The chain, known for its “blue-light specials,” started in the late 19th century and later claimed the discount segment of the market.
But in 2002, it filed for bankruptcy protection, becoming the largest U.S. retailer to do so at the time.
A merger with Sears made the situation worse, and Sears later filed for Chapter 11 in 2018.
Kmart, which once had more than 2,000 stores, had less than 200 since the retailer emerged from bankruptcy.
