Lane closures in Tennessee to be halted during Thanksgiving travel period

NASHVILLE, Ky. – Travelers passing through Tennessee will have one less worry about getting to the airport on time this holiday.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation says it is halting all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways due to expected higher traffic across the state.

All construction-related lane closures will stop beginning at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 23 through 6 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 28.

AAA predicts in Tennessee, 1.2 million will take a road trip; an increase of 12,000 people from last year’s holiday and the busiest Thanksgiving since 2019.

TDOT commissioner Butch Eley said Thanksgiving is “the most traveled holiday of the year.” In addition, he said Wednesday and Sunday are the predicted peak travel days.

While all lane closure activity will be stopped, workers may still be on-site in some construction zones.

Long-term lane closures will also remain in place on some construction projects for motorists’ safety.

Motorists are reminded to drive safely and obey the posted speeds, especially in work zones.
