Lady Toppers Split Weekend Series vs FAU
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — After the epic comeback win on Friday, the WKU women’s basketball team wasn’t able to duplicate the same success on Saturday against Florida Atlantic, falling 75-70.
Raneem Elgedawy was the game’s leading scorer with 27 points on the night, her sixth 20-point performance of the season out of eight total games played. Elgedawy pulled down 11 rebounds for sixth double-double of the season.
Meral Abdelgawad filled the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and three assists. Her seven steals were a new career high. Myriah Haywood had fourth consecutive game in double digits with 12 points along with a career high four assists. Hope Sivori was the fourth Lady Topper in double figures with 10 points along with five rebounds.
WKU had a better start on Saturday compared to Friday with a 19-16 lead after the first quarter. FAU did their damage in the second, outscoring the Lady Toppers 24-11 which included a 16-2 run to end the half up 42-30.
The Lady Toppers opened the second half with a 9-2 scoring advantage to cut the game to five. After an Owl three, WKU cut it to two behind a 9-3 run. FAU pushed it back out to 10, but the Lady Toppers scored the final six points of the quarter to go into the fourth down 59-55.
FAU was ahead 68-57 at the 6:47 mark of the fourth quarter. WKU scored five consecutive points following and kept it in single digits the rest of the way. Ally Collett and Sivori hit back-to-back 3-pointers to get the Lady Toppers within three with nine seconds left, but FAU made good on a pair of free throws to seal the win.
WKU shot 40 percent (6-of-15) from beyond the arc. It was only the second time this season the Lady Toppers have shot 40 percent from 3-point range.
WKU will hit the road for the first time since January 14 next weekend. The Lady Toppers are scheduled to travel to Rice for games on Friday and Saturday.
