Lady Toppers Notch 1-0 Shutout at Belmont in Exhibition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — WKU Soccer closed out exhibition play on Thursday evening with a 1-0 win at Belmont.

“We got exactly what we wanted tonight,” said head coach Jason Neidell. “We were able to play a quality side in Belmont while getting our young players some really great match experience. We improved over the course of 90 minutes, and games like this will pay huge dividends for this team down the road. We were also able to see exactly what we need to work on to prepare for our first regular season match next week against a really good Tennessee Tech team.”

Freshman Rylee Finol scored the lone goal of the game in 23rd minute. WKU got off 10 shots in the match, putting three on goal. Katie Erwin, Rebecca Roth, Kayla Meyer and Finol each had two shots while Kendall Wade and Aspen Seaich had one.

Three WKU goalkeepers (Maddie Davis, Emma Tompkins and Mia Roberts) saw action in the match, each playing 30 minutes. Roberts made the only save of the match.

WKU concludes exhibition play with a pair of shutouts after a 2-0 win at Chattanooga on Saturday, Aug. 5 and the 1-0 win at Belmont on Thursday. The Lady Toppers held Belmont to just four shots in the match, with just one on goal.

The Lady Toppers will open the regular season on Thursday, Aug. 17 at the WKU Soccer Complex against Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m. That match starts a 6-match homestand for WKU. That home stretch includes a rematch with Belmont on Sept. 6 in Bowling Green.
