Lady Toppers Fall to Rice 64-55
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU women’s basketball team fell on the road to Rice, 64-55, on Friday afternoon after a strong third quarter by the Owls. The two teams will play each other again on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Raneem Elgedawy led the Lady Toppers in scoring for the eighth time this season with 29 points, tying her career high. Elgedawy had 22 points at halftime. She also had 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and fifth straight.
Fatou Pouye also had a double-double with 11 points and a career high 14 rebounds. Eleven of her 14 boards were offensive rebounds.
WKU got off to a slow start, falling behind 8-0 in the opening minutes. The Lady Toppers used a 5-0 run with three minutes left to get back within three and ended the quarter down only three.
The Lady Toppers warmed up in the second period, more specifically Elgedawy caught fire. WKU scored 20 total points in the frame, 14 of which came from Elgedawy. Overall, WKU only made one more field goal than Rice in the quarter, but connected on four 3-pointers compared to Rice’s one. WKU took a 35-34 lead into halftime.
Rice doubled up the Lady Toppers in the third quarter, outscoring WKU 18-9 in the frame. WKU used a 6-0 run in the fourth quarter to cut the lead down to four, but the Owls prevailed.
The Lady Toppers outrebounded Rice 44-36, including a 24-9 disparity on the offensive boards. WKU didn’t capitalize on the advantage though, scoring only 10 second chance points. The Lady Toppers forced the Owls into 20 turnovers while only making 15 miscues themselves.
WKU moves to 6-11 overall and 5-6 in Conference USA. Rice improves to 11-1 and 7-0 in league play. The Lady Toppers remain fourth in the East in C-USA standings.
