Lady Toppers face Mercer on the road

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU women’s basketball will put its 2-0 start to the season on the line on Tuesday night on the road. The Lady Toppers will take on Mercer in Macon at 6 p.m. (CT).

ABOUT THE TOPS
WKU is off to a 2-0 start for the second straight season and the 23rd time in program history. The Lady Toppers will be aiming for a 3-0 start which would also be the second straight season achieving the feat and the 14th time in school history.
Defense is a hallmark for Greg Collins’ teams on The Hill. WKU has finished in the top 30 nationally in steals per game in four of the last five seasons and currently have the seventh best steals per game rate in the country (19.5). Last season the Lady Toppers held opponents to 63.5 points per game, the lowest average of any Collins coached team at WKU.
After the first week of play WKU has four players averaging double digit points. Zsofia Telegdy is putting up 13.5 points per game, Mackenzie Chatfield is scoring 13.0 per game, Destiny Salary is averaging 12.5 and Acacia Hayes is chipping in 11.5.
Against Indiana State, Hayes had 10 steals, tying the WKU record and tying Conference USA’s record against a Division I opponent. Her 6.0 steals per game rate is second in the nation after the first week of play.
Five Lady Toppers come to Bowling Green internationally, which is the highest number of international athletes WKU women’s basketball has had on one team in program history.
The Lady Toppers were picked to finish fourth in the Conference USA preseason coaches poll, behind Middle Tennessee, Liberty and FIU and above Louisiana Tech in fifth.
SERIES INFORMATION
Tuesday’s game will be the fifth all-time between WKU and Mercer. The Lady Toppers own a 3-1 record against the Bears in the series.
WKU has played only once in Macon, defeating the Bears 75-62 in 2019.
Last year the Lady Toppers opened the season with a 70-64 win against Mercer at home.
ABOUT THE BEARS
Mercer is coached by former WKU head coach and player Michelle Clark-Heard. It’s Clark-Heard’s first season in Macon. She coached at WKU for six seasons (2012-2018).
The Bears are 1-1 on the season with a season-opening 75-52 win against UNC Asheville and a 58-58 loss to Florida Atlantic.
Ashlee Locke leads Mercer in scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.5 points per game and 13.0 boards per game.
