Labor Day weekend travel safety tips

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The final holiday weekend of the summer is coming up, and for those who celebrate their 3 day weekend by traveling, make sure to keep your eyes on the road.

“Motorists who are looking to travel out of town should expect extra traffic on the interstates, parkways, expressways and really any routes. It’s certainly a good idea to plan ahead, know where you’re going to go, how you’re going to get there,” Wes Watt of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says.

Part of knowing how to get there is checking the traffic and knowing what time to leave for your destination.

“The two busiest days for this Labor Day holiday weekend will be Thursday afternoon and Friday. If you can get up and leave before 7 a.m. or wait and leave in the evening, you will miss most of the congestion, especially if you’re traveling through a metropolitan area during rush hour,” Lynda Lambert from AAA East Central says.

With this being a holiday weekend, construction workers won’t be in the way. However, that doesn’t mean you should speed through the zones.

“Generally, most states will halt construction on road projects as much as they can over a holiday weekend. The construction zones should be at a minimum, but it’s certainly possible that the speed zones could still be up for slower speeds because it may not be able to take all the traffic control down and whatnot, but there may not be workers out there working. It’s important to obey all the signage and all the speed limit signs,” Watt says.
