KSP to launch Click It or Ticket Campaign

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Memorial Day is coming up which means more cars will be on the road throughout the busy holiday weekend. That’s why law enforcement is launching a campaign to help people avoid potentially fatal wrecks.

Kentucky State Police Post 3 will be out on the roadways starting next week, increasing their seat belt enforcement.

Click it or Ticket, is a national seat belt campaign which starts Monday and goes until June 2.

The message of the campaign is simple, buckle up or pay up.

In Kentucky, the law states that all passengers in a car and the driver must be wearing a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt. The public information officer with KSP Post 3 said the campaign is not about handing out tickets, it’s about saving lives.

“Usually during our Click it or Ticket campaign, it’s always during Memorial Day when we see an increase in traffic. We also see an increase in impaired drivers. Nowadays distracted driving is big, texting while driving. All that separates someone from that person that’s coming toward them is a painted yellow line. Maybe you trust your own driving, but it’s the person that’s coming toward you that you must worry about,” said Trooper Jeremy Hodges, public information officer at Kentucky State Police Post 3.

In 2018, 52.8% of highway fatalities involved people who were not wearing a seat belt.
