KHSAA Provides Update on Return of High School Athletics

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The state of Kentucky is one step closer to the return of high school athletics.

KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett provided an update in regards to the return of high school sports on Thursday, saying that the organization will continue to follow orders from Governor Andy Beshear, meaning that no high school sports activities can return before June 15.

With the current dead period scheduled to end on June 8th, the KHSAA Board of Control proposed a plan that would let coaches and athletic directors begin preparing weight rooms on June 1st and then allow face-to-face interaction between coaches and players from June 9-14.

In addition, the Board of Control said they will not entertain any sort of request for an extra year of eligibility due to Covid-19, and voted to officially eliminate the statewide summer dead period, which traditionally runs from June 25 – July 9.

The measure to nix this year’s dead period was put to a vote and passed by a 13 to 5 margin.
