Kentucky Steps to host refugee simulation on July 14

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Many Bowling Green refugees were affected by the December tornadoes. This week, a local organization is creating a refugee simulation to help others learn about the experiences their population goes through.

Kentucky Steps hopes to teach people about the three stages that refugees go through: pre-flight before they depart, flight when they leave and post-flight after they arrive.

There will also be activities that will help visualize what it’s like to be a refugee.

Those with the organization say they are excited to offer this unique opportunity to the community.

“At the end, we have an actual simulation. So you’re going to be given a scenario and be asked to go to different vendors to fix your scenario, which is common for what refugees actually experience when they come to America,” Paige Coleman, a social worker/therapist with Kentucky Steps, says.

The simulation takes place on July 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at Refuge Bowling Green next to Parker Bennett Curry Elementary.
