Kentucky legislators to consider mail order wine sales

ALVATON Ky. – Kentucky is currently one of five states that don’t allow wineries or distributors to ship wines directly from another state to a private home.

Yet, a bill that just passed the state Senate may change that.

The bill passed the Senate, 29-5, on Friday. It now heads to the state House.

This bill was revised to ensure that consumers and vineyards wouldn’t be able to bypass taxes by shipping the wine.

Rex Reid from Alvaton’s Reid’s Livery says he doesn’t think sales at the winery will be affected if approved, as visiting local wineries is an experience in of itself.

“Going to a winery, visiting the owners and seeing where it was made, knowing where it was grown is part of the winery experience,” Reid said.

The measure, if passed, would allow adults to purchase up to 24 cases of 9-liter bottles each year through such shipment.
