Bills heading to Beshear for possible approval
FRANKFORT, Ky. – The state legislature is currently sitting in a 10-day veto period where we wait for Gov. Andy Beshear’s move on multiple measures.
The Kentucky General Assembly passed a bill that includes new language to clarify the state’s abortion ban.
Supports of this measure, known as House Bill 90, believe this will give doctors the clarity they need.
However, some people worry the language could force doctors to wait until patients are near death before intervening.
In addition, the now-amended Senate Bill 89 received final passage on March 13.
According to the Kentucky General Assembly website, it would weaken Kentucky waterway protections if signed into law.
If it becomes a law, the measure would limit the state’s authority to protect rivers, streams, creeks and other waters beyond the federally protected waters of the United States from pollution.
Supporters argue doing so would ease the burden of environmental regulations on the coal mining, construction and agriculture industries.
However, those against the measure say it could limit access to clean water and create health risks for more than 1 million Kentuckians who rely on groundwater and private wells for drinking.
