BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- A week and a half ago, WNKY told you about a child diagnosed with measles living somewhere in the Barren River Health District. .

Now, we’re learning just how problematic the illness has been this year. Officials say it’s the worst measles outbreak they’ve seen in years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 159 measles cases since Jan. 1 in the United States.

Those cases are here in Kentucky, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington.

The CDC says measles is highly contagious but a two-dose vaccine is 97% effective against the virus.

The disease was eliminated in the United States in 2000, but is found in many other countries, which is how the current outbreak started.
