Keeping young drivers safe after permit age is lowered

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Last month, Governor Andy Beshear passed a bill that allows people at least 15-years of age to apply for an instructional driving permit. So, what does this mean for the commonwealth?

Officials believe this will open up the conversation from parent/guardian to child. When preparing for the instruction permit, studying lane changes, turning, and road sinage are crucial.

Expert say to take your teen to an empty parking lot. This allows them to fully experience the car’s entities.

Bowling Green Police Department Officer, Ronnie Ward, reflects on his time learning to drive. He believes lowering the driving age will open up conversation of responsibility.

Ward grew up on a farm and “drove [tractors] around in the field.” He says Kentucky will soon “have a lot more drivers … younger drivers” out in traffic. Ward advises others to exhibit “more patience.”

He also reminds others to be a good role model for your soon-to-be-driving teen, like eliminating distractions and practicing positive roadway manners.
