How to safely kayak this summer

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – Kayaking is an increasingly popular watersport, as with any sport there are risks to be aware of.

According to Statista, almost 20 million Americans went kayaking in 2023. There are over 1,800 waterways in Kentucky, and in Warren County, Drakes Creek is most frequented.

Before embarking on kayaking trip, be weary of weather conditions. Water temperature, high winds, heavy waves or low visibility increases risks substantially.

Wearing appropriate clothing based off of water temperature can decrease the chance of Hypothermia. Life jackets are imperative and decrease the risk of death.

Staying close to shores ensures visibility to other persons, boats or jets. Never kayak alone or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Aside from water temperature, avoid kayaking in the fog, nighttime or during storms. Also use navigation devices during long paddling trips.
