International Center of Kentucky credits local community for refugees transitioning easily

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The International Center of Kentucky faces high volumes of families attempting to resettle in Bowling Green.

However, there aren’t a shortage of resources to make that happen for them and the community is making it easier.

For refugees, resettling in Bowling Green typically starts with fleeing their home country to a second one.

They must cross an international border to be classified as a refugee.

Then they must register with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and in most cases stay in a refugee camp.

All of this must take place before they’re able to enroll in the U.S. resettlement process.

The international center can then assist with providing housing, money for rent and food if their SNAP runs out.

Even with situations where the center has to assist 100 families a month, the community is making the transition easier for refugees.

Broadway United Methodist Church is one example, who is currently raising money to assist the International Center.
