Infant dead after house fire in Monroe County
TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky. – The Kentucky State Police says it is investigating after a house fire left one infant dead and a toddler severely burned.
According to a release by KSP, troopers received a call from the Monroe County 911 Center on Oct. 21 shortly after 1 p.m. requesting investigative assistance for a residential fire in the limits of Tompkinsville in Monroe County.
Troopers say they arrived at a home on West Sixth Street in Tompkinsville. Tompkinsville Fire Department also responded to battle the fire.
After preliminary investigation, troopers say they learned Ashton Wright, 25, woke up to her home full of smoke.
Authorities say Wright’s two children were inside of the house. Wright, with the assistance of a neighbor, was able to get one of the children out of the home, however, they were not able to reach her other child.
According to the release, firefighters located an 8-month-old dead inside of the residence. A 2-year-old child was transported to the hospital for treatment of severe burns.
Troopers say the cause of the fire is believed to be from an electric space heater inside of the residence. However, this incident is still under investigation.
The Kentucky State Police was also assisted at the scene by other Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Tompkinsville Police Department, Monroe County EMS and the Monroe County coroner.
