Volcano erupts near Congolese city of Goma; residents flee

GOMA, Congo (AP) — Authorities in Congo say Mount Nyiragongo has erupted for the first time in nearly two decades. The volcano is located near the city of Goma, which has a population of 2 million. Its last eruption, in 2002, left hundreds dead and coated airport runways in lava. Goma residents began fleeing in panic as the skies turned a fiery red Saturday night. There was no immediate word on any casualties, though witnesses said lava had consumed part of a highway linking Goma to the town of Beni. The U.N. peacekeeping mission said it was conducting reconnaissance flights and said it did not appear the lava was flowing toward the city itself.
