Virus lockdowns mute VE Day celebrations; US jobless to rise

PARIS (AP) — European leaders are holding muted commemoration events to mark the end of World War II on the continent, as lockdown measures to battle the spread of the coronavirus meant that crowds can’t celebrate VE Day. The lack of celebrations is in stark contrast to theyway millions of citizens spilled onto streets 75 years ago waving flags and flashing victory signs. Street parties were banned in Britain on Friday and in France, President Emmanuel Macron laid a wreath at the Arc de Triomphe monument. In the United States, authorities were expected to released the worst set of unemployment figures since record-keeping began in 1948.
